When your pet suddenly is not feeling well, it can be hard to know where to go or how quickly you need help.
At Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care (PVESC), we hear this question every day from Maine pet owners.

Choose Urgent Care If:

  • The issue is uncomfortable but not immediately dangerous
  • Your pet is still alert and acting mostly normal
  • Symptoms came on gradually

Choose Emergency Care If:

  • The issue involves breathing, bleeding, collapse, or extreme pain
  • Symptoms appeared suddenly or are getting worse quickly
  • Your pet may have eaten something toxic
  • Your instincts tell you it is serious

Why PVESC Offers Both Urgent and Emergency Care

Not every situation requires the emergency room, but many pet concerns cannot wait for a routine appointment. Offering both levels of care allows us to:

  • Provide faster access to help
  • Reduce ER wait times
  • Ensure pets receive the right level of treatment
  • Support local veterinarians when they are closed or fully booked

This approach makes sure Maine pet owners always have somewhere to turn.
