Feline Diabetic Syringes

The type of insulin syringe used should correspond to the concentration of the insulin being used. Both U-40 and U-100 insulins are used in cats. The appropriate insulin syringe should match the insulin concentration. It is generally recommended to use an insulin syringe with a half-inch needle to penetrate the skin of diabetic dogs.

When drawing up the insulin, always hold the insulin syringe vertically to avoid unnecessary bubbles in the syringe. If you get bubbles in the syringe, flick the syringe with your fingers until the bubbles rise to the top and push the air out of the syringe with the plunger or push the insulin back into the vial and start over.

To dispose of used syringes, it is best to keep a thick plastic container (such as a laundry detergent container) to deposit used needles. When full, the container can be dropped off at any pharmacy for disposal.
