Complications Of Canine Diabetes
Long-term, diabetic pets are at risk for a number of related conditions including cataracts, urinary tract infections, and diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis is more likely to occur in pets that become sick, miss their insulin shots, and who are not receiving an adequate dose of insulin. Sick diabetic pets benefit from prompt hospitalization so that they can receive the insulin they require to control their glucose levels and prevent ketone formation.
Nearly all diabetic dogs develop cataracts. Other complications include dry eye and corneal ulcers. It is a good idea to have your dog seen by one of our ophthalmologists.
